Library Catalogue
OneSearch includes the holdings of the Centre for Newfoundland Studies and is the place to search for books, theses, honours dissertations, government reports and other monographs. It will also help you locate maps, films, sound recordings, periodicals and newspapers.
Newspapers
Microfilm of the (Evening) Telegram, the Western Star and the Daily News (St. John's) are housed on the 1st floor of the QEII Library. A number of 19th and 20th century Newfoundland newspapers are available on microfilm in CNS. Some newspapers have been digitized for the Digital Archives Initiative.
Periodicals
Many of the Centre's periodicals have been indexed. The Centre’s Periodical Article Bibliography database identifies over 110,000 citations to articles appearing in journals between 1668 (the earliest article collected) and the present. For access to other indexes please inquire at the CNS Information Desk.
Theses and Honours Dissertations
The Centre for Newfoundland Studies is the depository for Memorial University honours dissertations and masters research reports. Paper copies are available in the Centre. The Centre holds paper copies of theses up to 2012. All theses are available in digital form on the Research Repository. Links to digital copies are in OneSearch.
Pre-1900 Maps
The Centre holds an important collection of Newfoundland and Labrador maps up to 1900. Descriptions and call numbers will be found in OneSearch as well as links to digitized versions that are available through the Digital Archives Initiative. Consult the Map Room on Level 2 for current and 20th century maps of Newfoundland and Labrador.
Other Resources
Under such specific topics as Biographies, Book Reviews, Theatre Reviews, Communities, Ships, and under many general subject headings, is kept material not normally catalogued: newspaper clippings, periodical articles, programmes, brochures, etc. Inquire at the CNS Information Desk or view the lists of files online.
Archives and Special Collections
The Archives (formerly the CNS Archives) holds an extensive collection of original manuscripts, personal papers, diaries, scrapbooks, photographs and other such materials which document various aspects of Newfoundland society. Researchers should contact the Archives at (709) 864-4349 or via e-mail at archives@mun.ca to inquire about regulations governing access and use of the materials and hours of operation.
