Loan periods

There is no limit to the number of items that can be borrowed from the library. How long you may keep items depends on your Memorial status and item type (see below). Renewals are possible for most material.  

Standard loan periods

Undergraduate students 

  • Books and items located in “stacks”: 4 weeks 
  • Periodicals: 1 week for back-issues 

Graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, research assistants, & staff 

  • Books and items located in “stacks”: 4 months 
  • Periodicals: 1 week for back-issues 

Faculty 

  • Books and items located in “stacks”: 4 months 
  • Periodicals: 1 week for back-issues; current issues may also be borrowed for 1 week from the QEII and Music Library 

Alumni & guests 

  • Books and items located in “stacks”: 2 weeks 

We have no late fees for most of our collection. However, there may be a charge for late reserve items, recalled items, and lost books. 

Course reserves 

Loan periods for course reserves are set by instructors. This may place restrictions on loan time, indicated at checkout. 

Unique items 

Some Memorial Library branches have unique items, like board games, light therapy lamps, headphones, and more, all available for loan and/or in-library use. Please ask at your branch’s service desk for more information.  

  • QEII: Light therapy lamps, charging lockers, many unique in-library items available via The Commons 
  • Health Sciences: chargers, white board markers, headphones,  
  • Grenfell: cell phone chargers, calculators, board games, yoga mats, and more 
  • Marine Institute: cell phone chargers, calculators 
  • Music: collected works and historical sets, cell phone chargers, external CD/DVD drive 
  • Labrador: cell phone chargers, calculators, magnifiers, UV lamps, podcasting equipment, instax cameras, ereaders, and more 

Accessing items in Archives and Special Collections & the Centre for Newfoundland Studies 

  • Archives and Special Collections (ASC): Items cannot be borrowed and can be accessed by appointment, for use in the ASC Reading Room. 
  • Centre for Newfoundland Studies (CNS): Items cannot be borrowed and can be accessed during open hours, for use in CNS Reading Room. 

Many resources are also available online in the Digital Archives Initiative and the Research Archives at Memorial University.
