In-Person Borrowing from Other Libraries

The Canadian University Reciprocal Borrowing Agreement (CURBA) makes it possible for Memorial students, staff, and faculty to borrow library materials from participating university and college libraries across Canada, and for students, staff, and faculty from those same institutions to borrow from Memorial libraries. The agreement affects member institutions of four library consortia:

  • CAAL-CBPA: Council of Atlantic Academic Libraries / Conseil des bibliothèques postsecondaires de l’Atlantique
  • PBUQ: Partenariat des bibliothèques universitaires du Québec
  • OCUL: Ontario Council of University Libraries
  • COPPUL: Council of Prairie and Pacific University Libraries.

Obtaining a CAAL card

Memorial students, staff and faculty need a valid CURBA/CAAL card to borrow library materials at participating libraries. CURBA/CAAL cards are issued at most Memorial University Libraries service desks. DistancePlus borrowers can contact qe2publicservices@mun.ca or hslill@mun.ca to obtain a card.

Using your CAAL Card

Upon presentation of the appropriate identification, a host library will normally enter information about the user into its circulation system or patron database. For borrowing purposes, each host library will decide whether to use the library card from the individual’s home institution or to provide that person with one of its own library cards

The lending library’s regulations related to loan periods, renewal and recall procedures, and fines will apply to all loans. Lost or damaged materials should be reported to the library from which the item was borrowed. Students, faculty and staff are responsible for paying any fines, lost book charges or processing charges incurred

If you’re a visitor to Memorial Libraries with a reciprocal borrowing card, visit any library service desk to register for a library account. You will have all the same borrowing privileges as at your own institution, except for Document Delivery.

Returning borrowed items

Materials borrowed under the agreement may be returned to the library that owns the materials or to another library within the same consortium. Materials may not be returned to libraries that are outside of the consortium.
