Information Literacy at Memorial University Libraries: Mission & Goals
Mission
The Information Literacy mission of Memorial University Libraries is to foster and promote strong critical information and research practices, habits and understandings throughout the Memorial University community. Information literate people are those who approach research strategically, iteratively, and ethically in order to find, evaluate, and use information to answer questions and create knowledge.
Rationale & Approach
Information literacy is one of the fundamental outcomes of a university education, and is an essential part of Memorial’s commitment to excellence in teaching, research and scholarship. Adopting the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education as a guiding document, we aim to work with faculty to incorporate information literacy across the curriculum and to provide the instruction necessary to support such components.
Program Goals & Objectives
The following are the broad Information Literacy goals of Memorial Libraries, presented in brief with specific objectives for each goal.
Goal 1: to provide students of Memorial University with opportunities to develop information literacy skills and to become competent, critical users of information.
Objectives:
1. To develop our understanding of and improve instructional opportunities for underserved groups on campus.
2. To integrate information literacy instruction into the curricula of academic programmes at Memorial.
3. To use educational technology to deliver, enhance, and support information literacy instruction.
4. To provide effective and meaningful information literacy instruction for all students at Memorial.
Goal 2: to provide effective teaching, and thus facilitate successful learning and acquisition, of information literacy practices, habits and understandings.
Objectives:
1. To foster higher-order critical information literacy skills by engaging students in creative, relevant, and active learning experiences that address a variety of learning styles.
2. To assess the effectiveness of information literacy programming, as well as students’ satisfaction, confidence, and actual ability to meet defined learning outcomes.
3. To offer programs, practices and strategies designed to support librarians teaching Information Literacy at Memorial..
Goal 3: to foster an awareness of and an appreciation for the role of information literacy relevant to the educational and research needs of the university, and beyond.
Objectives:
1. To communicate and collaborate with schools, faculties, and individual professors at Memorial to promote information literacy.
2. To collaborate with other instructors and support groups at Memorial who teach and support information literacy.
3. To collaborate with groups in the community who support information literacy and lifelong learning.
